How Safe is Chiropractic For a Child?
Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of children’s health care. A chiropractor does not adjust a baby or a child the same way as he or she adjusts an adult. A baby’s spine is very supple during the first few months of life, so the doctor of chiropractic applies only a slight pressure to make an adjustment. For older children whose spine is still made of mainly cartilage, slight pressure followed by a gentle push is all that is required to put the vertebra back in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
I understand a parent’s fear the chiropractor for their babies. With adults, our adjustments can mean a lot of pressure and cracks. But one very important factor to consider is that Chiropractors do not take the same approach of adjustments for babies as they do adults. If you see me adjusting a baby you will notice that adjustments for babies are gentle and many times will go unnoticed by the baby.
So what is Dr. Rebman doing when adjusting a baby? She’s simply taking pressure, nerve stress, off the spine, so the body can express itself. The pressure I use used on a baby is equivalent to the pressure one uses to check fruit for ripeness. Chiropractic care has also proven to be safer and more effective than prescription medications and antibiotics.
This really depends on the baby and the age of the baby. Babies that do cry during an adjustment are not crying out of pain. Instead, it is usually out of fear from something new happening or the fact that a stranger is touching them.
Regular chiropractic care can help relieve the following in babies:
- Ear infections and earaches
- Colic and acid reflux
- Feeding and breastfeeding/latching issues
Chiropractic care in babies also keeps babies healthier because their nervous system and immune system are supported. If you are still unsure of whether or not to take your baby to the chiropractor, talk with your child’s pediatrician. Many doctors agree with chiropractic care or at least recognize there are very little risks involved with chiropractic care.
Yes! There are tremendous forces at work during labor and delivery which can affect your child. Children are also growing at a tremendous rate and are exploring the world we live in. This exploration develops a child’s mind and body, and it is important the connection between the brain and body are open lines of communication.
Dr. Rebman has adjusted babies from a few minutes old, through the formative years, and children who are turning in to young adults.
When you want to give your child a head start in good health and all the benefits of a conservative, drugless approach to health care, you should take your child to a chiropractor.
The importance of having a chiropractic exam during the first year of a child’s life is because spinal trauma can occur during birth, as well as from tumbles while learning to sit up or walk.
And just so you can have an idea, your child’s spine grows almost 50% in length during the first year!
Imagine a six-foot adult person growing to nine feet in just 12 months! This kind of tremendous growth and developmental changes make a complete chiropractic examination so important in the early stages of a child’s life.
On the other hand, Doctors of chiropractic believe it’s much more important to prevent diseases than wait till some disease occurs.
Chiropractors and chiropractic care have been providing safe and effective care for children for more than 103 years.
If chiropractic for children had not been proved effective and safe, parents would have long ceased to seek out a doctor of chiropractic for their children.
Here are the most common conditions for which children visit a chiropractor :
Earaches, neck pain, check-up, headache, upper respiratory, low back pain, allergies, asthma, enuresis, and thoracic pain.
Other reasons are ADD and ADHD, colic, torticollis, insomnia, growing pains, and persistent crying in infants.
